Manhattan Life agent, Amy Basbagill-Brogdon, who works with MESH Collective Members when they want to consider purchasing these products.

Indemnity insurance is a type of insurance that can help pay you a set amount of money when you experience certain medical expenses or covered health events. Traditional major medical insurance generally pays healthcare providers directly according to the terms of the health plan.  An indemnity policy pays a specified monetary benefit based on the services or events covered by the policy. Because of this, indemnity insurance is often described as supplemental insurance—it is designed to assist with medical expenses.

INDEMNITY INSURANCES DO NOT REPLACE MAJOR MEDICAL INSURANCE PLANS.

One of the easiest ways to think about indemnity insurance is "cash payment benefits for covered medical services." The policy establishes what it will pay for particular covered services, rather than simply promising to pay a percentage of whatever a doctor or hospital happens to charge.

You can use the money for anything you choose: medical expenses, daily bills, lost income, whatever.

It is important to understand that not all indemnity policies are the same. Some cover specific medical services (like being admitted to a hospital) while others may focus on particular events such as accidents (like having a broken bone or a laceration requiring stitches), or critical illnesses (like a stroke or heart attack).  An indemnity policy also should not be described as providing the same protection as comprehensive major-medical health insurance (see above).

In simple terms, major medical insurance generally may protect you against a potentially very large cost of healthcare, while supplemental indemnity insurance can provide monetary payments when specific covered medical services or events occur.

Hospital Indemnity Select

Hospital Indemnity Select is designed to provide cash benefits when you receive qualifying hospital care. Depending on the policy's requirements, benefits may be available for hospital admission and confinement, observation stays, certain emergency room or urgent care visits, ambulance transportation, skilled nursing care, and short-duration hospital stays.

When a claim is approved, benefits are paid directly to you, regardless of whether you have other insurance. You can use the money to help cover medical expenses or everyday obligations such as rent, mortgage payments, utilities, and other household bills. The benefits are available immediately and the policy is renewable for life, subject to its terms. Actual benefits depend on the covered event, applicable limits, and policy conditions.

Affordable Choice Enhanced

Affordable Choice Enhanced is a fixed indemnity insurance policy that provides cash benefits for certain healthcare services, including hospital admissions and stays, doctor visits, emergency room and urgent care visits, outpatient services, surgery, laboratory tests, radiology, prescriptions, and ambulance services. Fixed indemnity insurance pays a specified benefit when a covered service or event meets the policy's requirements.

There is also an optional rider for specified serious illnesses, including cancer, heart attacks, strokes, and organ transplants. Benefits, eligibility, and payment amounts depend on the policy selected.

PAID Enhanced — Personal Accident Indemnity

PAID Enhanced is accident-only insurance designed to provide financial benefits when you suffer a covered accidental injury. Depending on the coverage and terms, benefits apply to services and events such as emergency room treatment, ambulance transportation, hospital admission and confinement, surgery, fractures, dislocations, burns, dental injuries, physical therapy, and follow-up visits. It includes benefits for certain serious injuries, including concussion and paralysis.

This coverage can help reduce the financial impact of an unexpected accidents.  It offers 24-hour coverage or an option limited to off-the-job accidents, and it describes an optional annual wellness benefit rider. Accident insurance is limited to covered accidents and does not cover illnesses. Benefit amounts, limitations, and exclusions vary by plan.

Cancer and/or Heart and Stroke Insurance

This policy is designed to provide a lump-sum cash benefit if you experience a qualifying cancer diagnosis or a covered heart-related or stroke-related condition. These events can create substantial financial pressure, even for people who already have health insurance. The brochure describes different financial benefits for heart and stroke coverage, depending on the coverages selected.

The money can help with expenses such as deductibles, copayments, travel, household bills, or time away from work. The purpose is to give you additional financial flexibility, rather than to pay your medical providers directly for every treatment. The exact benefit depends on your policy, the condition diagnosed, and the applicable terms.

Cancer Care Plus — Cancer and Specified Disease Insurance

Cancer Care Plus is designed to provide financial support if you are diagnosed with cancer or other chronic diseases covered by the policy. A serious diagnosis can bring expenses beyond medical treatment.  This policy is intended to help ease that financial burden while you focus on your care.

When a covered diagnosis or event qualifies for benefits, the insurance company pays money directly to you. You can use the money as you see fit.  Coverage applies only to the cancers and diseases defined in the policy, so it is important to review the covered conditions, benefit amounts, exclusions, and other requirements before enrolling.

Out-of-Pocket Protection Plan

The Out-of-Pocket Protection Plan is designed to help with some of the costs that can arise when you receive hospital care.  The plan is designed to pay benefits according to its terms, helping ease some of the financial pressure that can come with a hospital stay.

Benefits are paid directly to you unless you assign them to a healthcare provider. You can use the money for eligible medical expenses or other household costs, depending on your needs. The plan has no deductible and no network restrictions. The amount you receive and the services that qualify depend on the policy you select and its terms.
